Will the real John Abraham please stand up?

Both are of Malayali descent. They have the same name. John Abraham.

One is popular for lowering his trunks in a hindi film. The other, a nomadic figure collected chanda money, touring through villages, beating a drum, making what he called, "people’s cinema." All this before crowd-funding campaigns became the norm.

So who was this John Abraham rarely heard and seen? Outside of the Malayalam film industry, where he is worshipped, his work doesn’t have the nationwide release that the other John Abraham gets.

Let’s try to separate the men from the boys.

John Abraham ((11 August 1937 – 31 May 1987) studied filmmaking at FTII, Pune in the 1960s, under the tutelage of Ritwik Ghatak and of Mani Kaul, whom he assisted on Uski Roti (1969). He then moved to Madras, where he made his first feature Vidyarthikale Ithile Ithile (1971, Malayalam).

He followed it with Agraharathil Kazhuthai (1977, Tamil), Cheriachante Krurakrithyangal (1979,Malayalam) and Amma Ariyan (1986, Malayalam).

The National Award winning film Agraharathil Kazhuthai is considered a classic. In this satirical film, a donkey strays into a village of upper cast Brahmins and becomes the talking point and the lead character of the film. The then Kerala Government stopped the film from being screened on Doordarshan as bigots rallied to have the film banned. The Sunday Indian called it a “hard-hitting satire on Brahaminical bigotry and superstition.” Agraharathil Kazhuthai is listed among the 100 Greatest Indian Films of all time by IBN Live's 2013 poll.

Another film that has a cult following is Amma Ariyan. The British Film Institute features Amma Ariyan in their list of Ten Best Indian movies ever made.

The BFI said about Amma Ariyan, "The docu-poetic film about the journey of a group of young men through Kerala, all somehow related to an unidentified corpse, also becomes a journey through the histories of the socioscapes depicted. As the film unfolds in the form of a letter from a son to his mother, Abraham relentlessly uses bodies and landscapes as media through whom a discourse on the search for the cinematic-political is visualised... A highly complex commentary on the history of the relationships between the personal, the social and the political as evidenced from the state's radical political past, the film was made entirely on the basis of public funds backed by the state film corporation."

What is unique about Amma Ariyan is Abraham's Odessa Collective (named after a scene from Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin). A group of enthusiasts travelled through villages to collect money from people willing to contribute to become a part of the people’s film movement. The minimum contribution was Rs 2, and the maximum, Rs 500. Amma Ariyan was exhibited across the state of Kerala on a non-commercial basis.

The Odessa Collective suffered a setback in May, 1987 when Abraham had a fatal fall from a house top where people had gathered to party. He died a day after his admission to the Calicut Medical College hospital, owing to medical negligence. Abraham had made only four films, but they had a lasting legacy on cineastes.

As his friend and filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan wrote in his memoir, Cinema Literature and Life: “Dear John, who asked you to die?”

And a coincidence: director John Abraham’s diploma film at FTII, Pune in 1969 was titled Priya. Actor John Abraham’s wife’s first name is Priya.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to see John Abraham play John Abraham in a biopic?

The 28-year-old will be seen playing the role of a RAW agent in the Abinay Deo-directed film, which is a sequel to the 2011 movie of the same name.

John Abraham Ties The Knot With Priya Runchal

John Abraham likes to do things in his own way. So instead of making a big-bang spalsh, John subtly broke the news of his marriage via a New Year tweet for his fans. According to the tweet, John Abraham and girlfriend Priya Runchal are married as he has signed off her name as Priya Abraham.

John met Priya Runchal, an NRI financial analyst and investment banker from USA native to McLeodganj, in Mumbai in December, 2010. Prior to that John was dating Bipasha Basu. John split with his girlfriend of nine-years Bipasha Basu in early 2011. Unlike that relationship, John has been extremely secretive about his status with Priya and has rarely spoken about her in the media save for those red-carpet and movie-premiere apperarences.

John Abraham to Get Married in 2012

This news is probably doing to disappoint millions of girls who were hoping that after his split with Bipasha Basu, John Abraham would be back in the dating game. However, it seems that John is finally saying goodbye to his bachelor days. It has just been reported that the hulk of Bollywood is on his way to getting hitched.
Known for his cute smile and a killer physique, John Abraham has confirmed that he would tie the knot with his banker girlfriend, Priya Runchal this year! This news comes close on the heels of John’s first production venture, “Vicky Donor”, being declared as a commercial success.
John had been quite reticent after he split-up with his girlfriend of eight years, Bipasha. Most industry insiders said that John was pretty shaken-up by the split. There were reports of John having become a bit reclusive after the break-up while Bipasha was still seen carrying her usual, self-assured persona. Despite being repeatedly provoked, John stayed away from fuelling any controversy about why things didn’t work-out with Bips.
He was equally reserved when he was first spotted with Priya to ensure that his new relationship wasn’t splashed across the media. It has been over a year since Priya and John have been dating. Now, it seems that the couple is headed the matrimonial way.
It has been reported that John Abraham was rather quick in realizing Priya as his life partner. He is said to have proposed to the pretty lady just two months after they started dating. John describes his equation with Priya as easy-going and honest.
John has also indicated that the marriage might not be as lavish as most Bollywood weddings. He substantiated this with calling himself impulsive and emphasized that the wedding would be a very personal, family affair. It could be a registered wedding too since John isn’t very religious and has confessed to bordering on being an atheist.
While Priya is based in London and John continues to travel around the world from his base in Mumbai, the long-distance relationship seems to have worked rather well. The couple has been blessed by their parents. John is reported to have met Priya’s, US-based family twice.
It seems that 2012 continues to cast a nuptial spell on Bollywood. The John-Priya wedding would obviously be one of the most awaited ones in Bollywood.
We are happy that John found love again and this time, he seems ready to ensure that his Lady Love is his, forever. Keep checking this section for John & Priya’s engagement and marriage dates that we promise to share with you at the earliest.

When John and Genelia 'almost' got married

This was one pairing which was waiting to happen. After being ‘cast’ together in the LG ad, the John-Genelia pair was just the toast and the talk of the town, which is now being toasted in Vipul Shah’s Force.

And when people talk of dedication and getting into the role, this duo will not just take the cake, but the entire bakery as a whole! What happened was that John and Genelia were shooting for a wedding scene which required them to do the traditional ‘saat pheras’. Reports have it that they were actually ‘stopped’ from finishing the saat pheras at the last minute. The reason? Well, news has it that ceremony conducted was so authentic that, by the time John-Genie completed the last round, they would have actually been pati-patni! The shoot happened in Malshej Ghat. Now for the twist! What actually happened was that whenever the film’s director Nishikant Kamath would say cut, the pandit just would not stop! That’s when someone from the unit realized and the ‘couple’ had to be stopped before the final round.”

Talking about the incident, Vipul Shah said that pandit in the scene was a localite who could not understand the dynamics of the shoot and insisted on completing the pheras. Despite the many attempts to make him understand about the ‘shot’, he just wouldn’t budge!

All in all, the shoot went on well! May we say, may the ‘Force’ be with John and Genelia.

Inception Special: We plant ideas in Bollywood Hotties' heads

Inception Special: We plant ideas in Bollywood Hotties` headsWe have a jolly good time seeding the ideas we'd like sown in our stars' heads, a la Inception

Inception takes place in a world where Leonardo DiCaprio's character Dom Cobb dives into people's dreams to extract information.

While there, he can also 'plant' an idea into the protagonist's head and make them believe in their awakened state that it is their own idea. Taking off from Inception, here is a list of dreams or ideas that planters must plant in our B-Town stars.

Dreamer: Katrina Kaif
Planter: Kareena Kapoor.

What: Katrina is the only one standing between Bebo and the number one position, so the Kapoor girl wants Katrina to 'dream' of a better life back home in London/Hawaii or wherever it is she came from -- leaving Bolly-wood forever and going back to her roots. Bebo might even buy her the one-way ticket.

Dreamer: Salman Khan
Planter: His friends and family.

What: The planters must tell Sallu to stop shedding his shirt and look at shedding his single status. It is time he got married now that Kat has moved on.

They can also egg on Mr Controversial saying that it has been a long time since Bollywood saw a big shaadi (the curtain fell on the Abhi-Ash wedding drama long ago) and it is time large-hearted Salman gave Mumbai something to talk about.

Dreamer: Karan Johar
Planter: Aam Aadmi.

What: The people who watch his movies (ordinary folk) must make him believe that it is okay if he makes films with actors other than Shah Rukh Khan.

KJo's SRK-obsession needs to crumble -- maybe his new bonding with Aamir Khan will give him some new ideas. Maybe, My Name Is Khan And I Am Not A Terrorist Part II with the new Khan dost -- Aamir?

Dreamer: Aishwarya Rai
Planter: Disgruntled filmmaker.

What: That she needs to concentrate on B-Town. She has flirted with the West and the South (Raavan, Robot) so Ash, the time is 'Abhi' (pun intended) that you need to stop looking elsewhere and come back to make a film that 'shek's (pun intended) up the B-Town world.

Dreamer: Shah Rukh Khan
Planter: Khan Fan Club!

What: The unique fan club needs to put an idea in his head that Salman Khan is not a bad guy.

Two buddy-buddies fighting over a woman who is married to somebody else? That's the stuff movie scripts -- which bomb at the box office -- are made of; not real life. So Bandra boys, stop being katti, she already has a pati and start going from Ash to bashes together.

Dreamer: Shahid Kapoor
Planter: All his ex-girlfriends.

What: Shahid's former gal pals must open up that head of his and remove his fuddy-duddy I-am-20-something-going- on-80 brain and replace it with a young man's brain.

Maybe, then Sasha will understand the meaning of being spontaneous, look less serious (like the world and its problems are weighing down on him). Jive to Mambo No 5. 'A little bit of Kareena in my life, a little bit of Priyanka by my side...'

Dreamer: Kareena Kapoor
Planter: Katrina Kaif.

What: Kat wants Bebo to stop looking at her as an outsider and be her best friend. The KKs have so much in common like age, initials, being approached for the same roles and endorsements and also have a 'Khan' each in their life. When they become BFFs, imagine the trouble they could make for Priyanka.

Dreamer: Priyanka Chopra
Planter: All the single girls.

What: They need to plant an idea in her head that it is okay to talk about the presence of a man in her life without going into the gory details.

Piggy Chops must know it is perfectly fine to admit that she is with Shahid Kapoor and how being in love is great.

Let us not hear the familiar 'Oooh, there is no one' or even the archaic 'We are just good friends' (does anybody even say that any more?).

Dreamer: John Abraham
Planter: Disgruntled fan.

What: Johnny Big Bucks needs to realise that money is not everything. He has managed to chase off all good filmmakers by quoting figures bigger than his biceps.

He should accept that he isn't the best judge on what films he should do, as three of his pet projects remain unreleased. Get a good manager, John. You will get good films and improve your media relations. Dono ek hi shot mein.

Dreamer: Hrithik Roshan
Planter: Well-wishers.

What: They must plant an idea in his head to go back to being a good boy. Hrithik can do with a brain transplant and take Shahid's serious brain.

The once-upon-a-time good boy is now seriously tripping on wine, women and what-not. Roshan Jr has also turned a deaf ear to papa Rakesh Roshan who made him the star that he is. He is flying like a 'Kite' and needs to be reeled in.

Dreamer: Deepika Padukone
Planter: Prakash Padukone.

What: Papa Padukone has got it into her head that it is time she left acting and moved on to a badminton court. With Saina Nehwal becoming World No 2, there's no reason apni Dippy would be unable to achieve her dreams. The endorsements would come too.

So, Deepika should put down the movie script and take the shuttle to another kind of success.

Dreamer: Sonam Kapoor
Planter: The Fashion Week organisers.

What: Fashion denizens would plant an idea into Sonam's head that she has what it takes to be a top-notch supermodel and is being wasted in films.

What with all the Indian and international fashion houses wanting her to walk the ramp for them and Papa Anil making (ahem!) waves in LA, the Kapoor beti can make a noise in the fashion capital of the world -- Paris.

Priyanka, John in cool Coorg

Priyanka, John in cool CoorgIt’s destination Coorg for the Saat Khoon Maaf team, with director Vishal Bhardwaj commencing shooting for the film near Virajpet. John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra, along with Vishal, have checked into an exotic resort in Coorg located 5 km from Madikere.

When TOI spoke to the owner of the resort, R Arvind, he sounded excited about their stay. “They’ve booked the entire resort for the next 50 days,” says Arvind, adding, “Vishal checked in four days ago and he seemed to be enjoying every moment.”

Priyanka and John checked in last Saturday with Anu Kapoor, Usha Uthup and Naseeruddin Shah’s youngest son, Vivaan Shah. The lead pair also enjoyed the IPL final together and tucked into seafood at the resort. A source tells us, “An old church has been recreated on location for the shoot. It took almost a month to put up the edifice, which is reminiscent of the ’20s architecture.”

Apparently, Vishal is happy with the quiet nature of the shooting spot. “He hopes that it’ll be maintained till they complete the schedule in Coorg,” says our source. While John flew back to Mumbai on Monday after two days of filming, Priyanka is the cynosure of all eyes now.
